I called the market top on January 12, 2008 when the S&P 500 Index closed at 1401, please see my e-Market Letter on my website www.theastuteinvestor.net As of the end of trading today, the S&P 500 Index closed at 870, a negative – 38 percent decline.

FORECAST: What stage is the stock market currently in and what can we expect in the future?

The stock market remains in Stage 1: Mark-Down – Downtrend. The market is expected to retest the November 20, 2008 market closing low of 752 on the S&P 500 Index and break through that level for another leg down.

Best Positions:
Investors: long equities vs. cash? Answer: remain in cash.
Speculators: long vs. short equities? Answer: remain short equities.
